wool yarns on a loom

Introduction

Studio Donegal, nestled in the picturesque village of Kilcar in County Donegal, Ireland, is a family-run woollen mill dedicated to preserving the traditional craft of hand weaving. Established in 1979 by Kevin and Wendy Donaghy, the studio emerged as a response to the decline of hand weaving due to the rise of mechanized looms in the 1960s. Today, under the stewardship of their son Tristan Donaghy, Studio Donegal continues to produce genuine handwoven tweed fabrics and garments, maintaining the authenticity and heritage of this indigenous craft. Visitors to the mill can witness the weaving process firsthand and explore a range of handcrafted products, all made on-site in Kilcar .

“Some people think we're mad to continue producing textiles in this old way, using out-dated equipment... But people are also beginning to realise the importance of maintaining indigenous craft.” (The Irish Times)
