Baby Shower Gift Ideas

If you're heading to a baby shower, or have a new baby on the way and not sure what gift to get, we have some handmade items that might just do the trick.

Meet Nelson and Sybil - sock monkey toys made from Donegal socks. Each monkey is kitted out in his or her sweater or handmade dress. It's also possible to have the child's or babies name embroidered onto the monkey to make it more special. Click here to head to the online store.

We also have Edward the elephant - another sock friend made from Donegal socks. He has colourful cotton ears and a patch on his snout too. Click here to see Edward in our store.

If toys are not what you are looking for, we also have some handmade blankets which are all knitted in Dublin. Again, we can personalize each blanket with the baby's name, dafe of birth and a cute symbol to add fun to it. If the baby has Irish and Canadian parents, we can also embroider both flags onto the blanket - this had been a very popular choice by gift-givers.

Irish Designer Jewellery by Designer Elena Brennan

We are really delighted to say that the beautiful work by Elena Brennan, from Co. Cavan is now available at the store.

Elena is an extremely talented jewellery designer working mostly in sterling silver. She is from our home county and we meet many years ago while showcasing our work at a local event. She uses stories and fables from Irish history and folklore as inspiration for her creations. One of her most famous collections is inspired by the "Children of Lir". This is a very old fable in which four children were banished by their stepmom to spend 900 years as swans on three different lakes. Her pendants shown in the images are inspired by this story. The capture the delicate nature of the swans wings.

The "Baby Angel Feather" also shown in the images is a reminder that our angels are all around us. When they are watching over us, sometimes they let us know that they are there by leaving little white feathers for us to find in places where there should be no feathers. This is one of those feathers...

Elena's work is available for purchase at the store and online also. If you have any questions about it, please pop in to see us.

The most recognized sweater around the world is the "Aran Sweater" featured in the first two of our images. A uni-sex design, worn by men and women for generations. Traditionally the yarns used were Irish - quite strong, rough and scratchy. Nowadays, merino yarns are used so the feeling is soft and luxurious yet the appearance is identical. A true classic. Irish Claddagh Rings - A Traditional Irish Ring

Birthstone Claddagh Ring

Sterling Silver Claddagh Birthstone Ring Birthstone Claddagh Irish Ring

Did you know that here in Irish Design House we stock a range of Claddagh Rings? We have both the Irish Celtic Claddagh Ring and The Birthstone Claddagh Ring. We have a range of sizes in store and on our our website. If we don't have your size/birthstone in stock, don't worry, we will gladly order them for you!

The Claddagh Ring is a traditional Irish ring. It represents love, loyalty, and friendship (the hands represent friendship, the heart represents love, and the crown represents loyalty). This makes it a beautiful and sentimental gift, either a gift for your friend or as a Valentine's Day gift!

As traditions go.. a Claddagh ring was worn with the intention of conveying the wearer's relationship status:

  1. On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: the wearer is single and may be looking for love.
  2. On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist: the wearer is in a relationship.
  3. On the left hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: the wearer is engaged.
  4. On the left hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist: the wearer is married.

Have a look online or pop into our store to see these for yourself!
